E-Cigarette

http://news11tv.net/2009/Health/E-Cigarette/?t202id=92122&t202kw=ad0

The E-Cigarette is simply fantastic. It offers the same feel, look and style of smoking without the side effects.. Ya know things like lung cancer, emphysema, bad breath, teeth discoloration and other things.

It comes in exciting flavors such as apple, cherry, chocolate and mint and is safe for second hand smoke.

In fact it seems that the only draw back of this device is that it costs $150! While there are cheaper models that do the same thing, I'm sure whichever way someone goes with going nicotine-less is probably a good thing.

High School and Smoking

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_2X_Cigarette_Smoking.asp

According to this website, 20% of high-schoolers smoke. Although I figure that this is very typical being that high-school is a very impressionable time in a kids life. They are struggling to fit in or want to think they are doing something cool by being a rebel or something.

The truth is that many children who end up smoking probably have easy access to it with in their own homes. The parents might leave their cigarettes out on a table and the child swipes a few to try and give to their friends as well.

The rest of them are probably the friend who isn't surrounded by the smoking stage but tries it out of curiosity anyway.

That is exactly what happened to me. One of my friends wanted to try it and offered me one. I turned down a full cigarette, however I took a few drags off of his. While he ended up finishing it, I had enough. I fed my curiosity and didn't feel like I needed to do it again. However, I may smoke a cigar or a cigarello (a mini cigarette) in special occasions like my brothers wedding for example or in a social setting where everyone wants to make a toast only with the cigarellos.

I think smoking is disgusting and find those who walk ISU's campus puffing on them simply unattractive. Some of the girls even turn my head but then I look to see a trail of smoke or the cigarette in her hand and just shake my head with disappointment. Such a waste to such a beautiful creation.

Smoking Ban in Military

There is a hotly debated topic within the military and its associations right now on the topic of smoking. Currently, it is allowed. However, if some groups such as the veterans affairs have their way, smoking could be a thing of the past.

According to the VA website, 8% of their 113 billion dollar budget goes towards smoking related causes such as emphysema, cancers and strokes.

According to Fox news, 1 of 5 people die in the U.S. because of smoking. Smoking is the #1 most preventable cause of premature deaths in society. The ban on smoking will also increase moral and overall physical fitness.

I personally think that this is a pretty decent idea. Granted I am a little biased because I am a non-smoker. However as a fiscal conservative, it is a good idea because over the course of that 1 of 5 peoples life times, you will most likely be paying less in smoking related medical costs.

About Me

Hello, my name is Neil Purdy. I am a Senior at Illinois State University. I have been an active member in the Delta Chi Fraternity where I am the chapters assigned counsel to the Inter Fraternal Counsel. That organization governs all fraternitys' on campus to have them comply with rules and regulations that the organization sets up.

I am a U.S. Navy veteran where I severed for four years upon an aircraft carrier and three submarines. I got out to pursue a college education. I am currently in the Navy Reserves. I go down to St. Louis once a month for drill. I haven't exactly figured out what I want to do once I get out, however I have several different options at my finger tips.

Anyway, for the main reason I have created this blog, is for my Political Science 312 class. It is an assignment. I am very opinionated, however, up til now, it has been conversations with friends, family or groups of people in class discussions. I am new to the blogging atmosphere, so hopefully this will be a great way to expand my viewpoints and share my thoughts.

My main issue that I will be blogging about this semester has to do with smoking and tobacco products. I chose this topic based on a part of the current health care reform. The military is also looking to decrease that number of smokers among its ranks. Hopefully through research and observation I will see different aspects of this controversial issue, both the good and the bad.
